on the Schema Theorem and theBuilding Block Hypothesis

چکیده
After decades of success, research on evolutionary algorithms aims at developing a sound theory that describes and predict the behavior of these algorithms. One research topic of interest is the analysis of the role of crossover and recombination in genetic algorithms, especially since various papers come to diierent conclusions. The goals of this paper are to revisit some well-known concepts and to discuss some new aspects that might be helpful for further clariication.

Schemata Evolution and Building Blocks
In the light of a recently derived evolution equation for genetic algorithms we consider the schema theorem and the building block hypothesis. We derive a schema theorem based on the concept of effective fitness showing that schemata of higher than average effective fitness receive an exponentially increasing number of trials over time. The equation makes manifest the content of the building bl...

We analyze the schema theorem and the building block hypothesis using a recently derived, exact schemata evolution equation. We derive a new schema theorem based on the concept of eeective tness showing that schemata of higher than average eeective tness receive an exponentially increasing number of trials over time. The building block hypothesis is a natural consequence in that the equation sh...
متن کاملThe Troubling Aspects of a Building Block Hypothesis for Genetic Programming
In this paper we rigorously formulate the Schema Theorem for Genetic Programming (GP). This involves defining a schema, schema order, and defining length and accounting for the variable length and the non-homologous nature of GP's representation. The GP Schema Theorem and the related notion of a GP Building Block are used to constlUct a testable hypothetical account of how GP' searches by hiera...
